Ability to link vector feature attributes to web sites or files.
Support the latest DEM and SDTS DEM formats, including decimeter DEMs.
Supports opening DLG-O and DEM files directly from gzipped archives. This means that you can save space and hassle by not having to decompress the data after you download it.
Slide over text. When you move your cursor around the screen you'll get a description of the nearest feature automatically displayed in the status bar.
Supports keyboard navigation. You can pan about with the arrow keys and zoom in/out with the page up/page down keys.
Search and edit load vector data by name, attribute value, or description.

GIS Viewing Tools You Shouldn't Be Without!

"How can I view data that I just downloaded or purchased?" Have you ever asked yourself this question? We've identified some of the best viewing products available by some of the GIS Industry's leading software providers. Most of these products are very simple to use and are freely available (generally this gets the user a time-stamped evaluation copy or a "limited" functionality release). Best of all, these products will enable users to view, query, and manipulate data in SHP, E00, MIF, DXF, DWG, SDTS, DLG, DEM, Sid, TIFF, and numerous other data formats. Make sure that some (if not all) of these programs are in your "Tools" directory!

SAGA - System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses- is a hybrid GIS software. The first objective of SAGA is to give (geo-)scientists an effective but easy learnable platform for the implementation of geoscientific methods, which is achieved by SAGA's unique Application Programming Interface (API). The second is to make these methods accessible in a user friendly way. This is mainly done by the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Together this results in SAGA's true strength: a fast growing set of geoscientifc methods, bundled in exchangeable Module Libraries.

Flowmap is a software package dedicated to analyzing and displaying interaction or flow data. This type of data is special in the sense that there are two different geographic locations connected to each data item: An origin location where the flow starts and an destination location where the flow ends. The flow data itself can be people (e.g. commuters, shoppers, hospital visitors), goods, usage of agricultural services or telecommunication and so on.

GMT is an open source collection of 60 tools for manipulating geographic and Cartesian data sets (including filtering, trend fitting, gridding, projecting, etc.) and producing Encapsulated PostScript File (EPS) illustrations ranging from simple x-y plots via contour maps to artificially illuminated surfaces and 3-D perspective views. GMT supports ~30 map projections and transformations and comes with support data such as GSHHS coastlines, rivers, and political boundaries. GMT is developed and maintained by Paul Wessel and Walter H. F. Smith with help from a global set of volunteers, and is supported by the National Science Foundation.
